Theodore (Ted) R. Kulongoski was born in rural Missouri on November 5, 1940. He served in the Marine Corps and later worked at a steel mill in Illinois. Ted served in the Oregon House of Representatives (1975-1978) and the Oregon State Senate (1978-1983). He was appointed Oregon Insurance Commissioner in 1987 and served until 1991. Kulongoski is the only governor in OregonÂs history to serve in all three branches of government at the state level: legislator, supreme court justice, and governor. As Governor, Kulongoski entered office faced with a $3 billion deficit in the state budget. Since then, he has created many jobs and is diminishing the enormous deficit. He is now looking to get re-elected in 2006. As of the end of March, he is ahead of all the other candidates in the polls. He is favored by 50% of people in Oregon as of February 27, 2006. Nipping at his heels is Republican candidate Kevin Mannix. We will see who wins this race for the finish line as the months pass.
